The story of the South Padre Island Parrot Head Club begins on a day no Jimmy Buffett fan will ever forget — September 1, 2023, the morning Jimmy sailed on to the next shore. I was in Las Vegas with my husband, getting ready for the day, when the news broke. I started crying — something I had never done for a celebrity, especially one I had never met. But Jimmy wasn’t just a celebrity. He was joy, escape, sunshine, and a way of life.

I told my husband, “We need to go to Margaritaville.”

When we arrived, a wreath sat by a chair in Jimmy’s honor. Standing there, I felt both the heartbreak and the beginning of something I couldn’t yet name.

Back home, a friend asked if I was going to Meeting of the Minds. I didn’t even know what it was. She explained, sent the itinerary, and the moment I read it, I knew: I needed to be there. I needed to be with people who loved Jimmy’s music and lifestyle as deeply as I did.

So I booked the trip and attended MOTM in October 2023, held for the first time in Gulf Shores. The moment I arrived, I knew I was in the right place — a sea of colorful outfits, Hawaiian leis, boas, cheeseburger hats, and parrots everywhere. The joy was electric. Sitting next to the friend who introduced me to MOTM, I turned to her and said, “We need a club at South Padre.”

That weekend lit the spark.

Months later, on May 4, 2024, I was at Louie’s Backyard celebrating the life of my daughter, who passed away in 2021. In the background, a singer began playing Jimmy Buffett songs. After dinner, I told my husband, “Let’s get closer — I want to hear him.”

The singer was J. Michael Laferty.

I introduced myself and told him that I loved all the Jimmy Buffett music he was playing and that I wanted to start a Parrot Head Club on South Padre Island. He smiled and said his wife had wanted the same thing — and he gave me her number.

And here’s the truth:

I believe meeting Michael that day wasn’t coincidence. It felt angel‑driven — a moment placed exactly where it needed to be, on a day already full of meaning.

I called his wife, and soon after, we submitted the paperwork to start the charter.

On June 16, 2024, the international organization of Parrot Head Clubs (PHIP) officially approved the charter for the South Padre Island Parrot Head Club.

What began with heartbreak turned into hope, community, and purpose.

Jimmy’s passing lit the spark. MOTM fanned the flame. And South Padre Island gave it a home — with a little help from angels along the way.

Today, our club stands as a celebration of Jimmy’s legacy — within two years, growing membership of 100 members, donating over $10,000 and supporting over 15 non-profit organizations. It’s a place where we party with a purpose, give back to our island, and keep the tropical spirit alive for everyone who needs a little sunshine in their soul.
